FEMA: Federal Emergency Management Agency

On March 1, 2003, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The primary mission of the Federal Emergency Management Agency is "to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from and mitigate all hazards."

FEMA Frequently asked Questions for Homeowners:

Valuable information such as, “How to View and Obtain Flood Maps” or “New maps (preliminary or effective) show my home now to be located in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA); how does this affect my property and me?”, can be found at this FEMA link:

What is the NFIP?

The U.S Congress established the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) with the passage of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968. The NFIP is a federal program enabling property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance as protection against flood losses in exchange for State and community floodplain management regulations that reduce future flood damages.

The official site of the National Flood Insurance Program is www.floodsmart.gov.

One way to determine if your property is located in a floodplain is by requesting a Property Floodplain Information document from the Flood Control District. Click on the following email to send a request for a Property Floodplain Information document:  MCFloodInfo@mohave.gov. Please provide the Assessors Tax Parcel Number and/or Street Address, your email address and a phone number. The report will be returned to you within a few days.

You can also determine the relative flood risk for your property at the NFIP Floodsmart.gov site. The result you see after using the risk tool on FloodSmart is not an official FEMA determination. It may not reflect how your property is shown on the effective Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for your community. For virtually every mortgage transaction involving a structure in the United States, a lender reviews the currently effective FIRM for the community in which the property is located to determine its location relative to the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), the area subject to inundation by the base (1-percent-annual-chance) flood.

Mohave County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System (CRS).
