Indigent Defense Services
The Mohave County Office of Indigent Defense Services (IDS) is a centralized intake, conflict review, and case assignment agency. IDS is tasked with assigning attorneys to represent clients in legal proceedings in which a person is constitutionally entitled to an attorney, based on indigency as determined by the courts. Case types assigned by IDS include criminal felony, misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, dependency, guardianship, Title 36, and appellate matters.
Cases are initially assigned to County defense offices (The Public Defender, The Legal Defender, or The Legal Advocate). In the event that these offices are unable to accept a case due to reasons such as ethical conflicts of interest and/or workload capacities, the case is assigned to an attorney contracted through IDS.
IDS provides neither direct representation nor legal advice, but works directly with contracted attorneys and experts to provide mandated services, assure compliance with contractual terms, and continue a coordinated effort of the indigent defense system.
