Other Nursing Division Programs & Info

Mohave County Department of Public Health Nursing is one of four divisions within the public health department. The department exists in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the residents of Mohave County. Public Health Nursing provides professional nursing services for high-risk populations. We also investigate and control communicable diseases so that we may live in healthy and safe communities.

The Nursing Division of the Mohave County Department of Public Health reaches out to the community through a range of public health programs. Many of the services are free, regardless of household income. Some services are provided on a sliding fee basis and others are available at a low, fixed cost. Funding for Public Health programs comes from sources such as grants, taxes, and local and state revenues.

Public Health Nursing operates out of three main district offices, with a Colorado City location covered approximately twice a week.

Division Programs

High Risk Perinatal Program (HRPP): This free program, which also includes developmental delay follow-up, features home visits by a Registered Nurse. In turn, a nurse arranges for home visits with the family to evaluate and monitor the child’s condition, screen for developmental delays, teach caretaking techniques, and answer questions. Often, referrals are made to other agencies that can assist with the child’s special needs.

Tuberculosis Control and Treatment: Tuberculosis is on the decrease in other states, but Arizona continues with a steady number of TB cases each year. To help combat this disease, the Public Health Nursing Division provides one–on–one case management for each case of active tuberculosis. TB skin testing is available for a fee.

Communicable Disease Program: The Nursing staff works with local physicians, the Arizona Department of Health Services, and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to control the spread of infectious diseases. We conduct outbreak investigations which include identifying cases and those exposed to cases, testing, providing immunizations or medications (if applicable), and providing information to the public on how to break the cycle of infection.

Pregnancy Testing:  Healthy pregnancies start with early prenatal care.  For this reason, Public Health Nursing provides pregnancy testing and counseling as early as fourteen days after a missed menstrual period. Public Health Nursing offers pregnancy testing for a fee. Please contact your local office for fee information, times and dates.

Reproductive Health/Family Planning: Some couples have chosen to wait to begin or expand their families, so the Mohave County Reproductive Health Program offers income-eligible family planning services. These services offer a variety of birth control methods to assist individuals/families in making family planning choices. The clinics are staffed by a professional medical team that includes a clinician specializing in women’s health, and registered nurses. Services are provided at no charge to an individual with an income of 150% or below the Federal Poverty Level. The Family Planning Program is funded by Title V from Arizona Department of Health Services. Please contact your local office for fee information, times and dates. (Currently not accepting patients. In need of a nurse practitioner. To apply, please visit https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/mohavecountyaz

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic: Clinics are held weekly to test for and treat the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Services provided include an exam, testing, counseling, treatment, and contact follow-up, if warranted.

Health Start Program: This home visitation program is a free service that permits a lay health worker, or “promotora," to be a resource for pregnant women and their families. After the birth of the child, the promotora visits the family in the home to provide education on health and safety issues such as immunizations, car seat safety, and home safety. High-risk mothers and infants are visited by a registered nurse to facilitate and encourage positive outcomes.
Please contact your local office for information.
