Local Emergency Planning Committee - LEPC
The Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) was established after the Federal government enacted the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). This act was implemented in response to a growing concern about the effect of chemical release on communities. The law requires industry to provide the public with information about its chemical process, chemical storage and emissions, and safety procedures. LEPC through the Mohave County Emergency Management Office is the repository for the annual reports provided by the companies using chemicals in the County of Mohave. The LEPC assists these companies in preparation of their emergency procedures and reviews these procedures on an annual basis to ensure compliance. These chemical inventory reports or "tier two" reports are provided to Mohave County LEPC and Arizona Emergency Response Commission (AZSERC) on an annual basis and are available to the public by written request.
The LEPC functions have expanded in recent years to include coordination of emergency planning for all types of hazardous events, and LEPC membership now includes representatives from over 40 organizations, including fire departments, police departments, schools, hospitals, industries and volunteer agencies. Quarterly LEPC meetings are open to the public and agencies concerned with emergency planning are encouraged to attend.
